First Step Press is always looking for ways to show our appreciation for the authors appearing in our publications. We're not a paying market, but that doesn't mean that we can't find other ways to compensate writers. That's where this announcement comes in. For the past two months, I have been working with a voting system on the SSM: ALMIA and CRM websites. I have been experimenting with things like how many votes a post would need to be counted, turning off voting after a certain date and to block voters from submitting multiple votes for the same article. This is done in preparation of our Writer of the Year awards.
Between September 1 and October 31, we are going to post the remaining accepted submissions to the websites. Submissions arriving and accepted before October 31, 2010, are eligible for the contest. We will reopen the ratings to the public on September 1, 2010, so everyone can start rating their favorite works. Voting will end on January 4, 2011.
The top three authors in each category (poetry and fiction) will receive a Writer of the Year certificate and a $25 Amazon.com gift certificate.
Wait, there's more.
We also want to recognize the artists, who have graciously allowed us to use their photos and other works. The art accompanying the winning posts will also receive an Artist of the Year certificate and a $25 Amazon.com gift certificate. I believe the art appearing on the site compliments the posts, forming a bond for the reader to enjoy. It's important for both to receive recognition.
And we didn't forget our readers. One reader from each of the winning post will also receive a $25 Amazon gift certificate. To enter, be sure to leave a comment on the post about what you thought worked well. Have a suggestion for the author? Leave a comment as well. We will select one reader from each of the post. You can vote for as many works as you wish, though you can only vote for the same post once.
Excited? So are we. So spread the word, help us decide our writers of the year and possibly snag a cool prize. We have included Facebook's "Like" button on the posts to make it easy to show friends what you're reading.
Good luck to everyone!
